Must Have Monday - All About Essential Oils + GIVEAWAY
Since I've started this blog, I like to ask moms and readers what they want to learn more about. Time and time again, the same question comes back - "Do you use essential oils on your child?", "What about essential oils, yay or nay", "What's your favorite essential oils to use?" - the list of essential oil questions go on! It's taken me a while to write this post as I wanted to take my time, do my research and try essential oils (EO's) so I could give the best feedback possible. After months of research, I came across an amazing brand from a friend of mine, Julie LaBarge, called doTERRA. I went to one of their classes and learned a ton! I am now a firm believer in the benefits of EOs and major fan of doTERRA. But, I am no expert. So, in order answer the many questions I've received on EO's, I felt it best to go straight to the source and ask an expert on the matter. Enter Julie LaBarge, a family Chiropractor and Acupuncturist as well as a doTERRA expert! Julie was with me throughout my entire pregnancy as I was a patient of her's. I trust her valued opinion on this matter completely. Below is my Q&A with Julie along with additional information and feedback from my own experience + an awesome giveaway.
What is your background/expertise?
Julie: I am a family Chiropractor and Acupuncturist at Berlin Wellness with focus on the prenatal and postpartum care. I interned with Dr. Berlin, fell in love with prenatal care and started working with him upon graduation. I spent high school in the middle east and was therefore exposed to a number of different treatment options for typical conditions; as well as my mom and grandma using “weird" holistic remedies on me. I put up a fight, until I noticed that they were working. I am thankful to them as I have been fortunate enough to not need prescription drugs in about 10 years. I came to understand these “weird” remedies during my acupuncture training while learning about the medicinal properties of plants and Chinese herbs. It was only a few months ago that oils came into my life and they have been a huge asset supplementing care to patients where Acupuncture or Chiropractic just wasn’t giving the results I wanted.
Why Essential Oils?
Julie: Nature is very resourceful, it has the ability to protect, reproduce and regenerate as necessary. Through the naturally occurring oils from flower petals, resin from trees and rinds of fruit the tiny aromatic molecules, we call scents, are a plant’s protective agent. These multifaceted molecules help ward off pests, attract herbivores and heal infections to continue the plants cycle of life. Essential oils are the oldest and most powerful therapeutic agents known to man. Essential oils were used by the ancient Egyptians for purification and embalming, by the Romans in political buildings and bath houses and referenced in Judeo-Christian and Muslim religious texts.
What are some of the main benefits of EO's compared to something more mainstream/commercial/over the counter?
Julie: EO’s are nature’s solution. While Pharmaceutical/OTC drugs are effective and have a time and a place, they also can create side effects whereas essential oils go to the root of the problem and help the body to heal itself, not masking the issue. Essential oils are known as adaptogens, meaning the same oil can treat both constipation and diarrhea as part of their effectiveness in bringing the body back into balance. This is because they're made up of the same things we are, hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. The oils have the ability to penetrate into each cell in our body because human cells are made up of an oily membrane. Certain threats and pathogens live on the inside of our cells and therefore EO's can address them. Pharmaceutical drugs are water based, not oil based, and that’s why they can’t address most all infections and can create side effects. They then get excreted leaving the liver and kidney’s to process them out.
As a mom, what are some key factors I should know about EOs when it comes to using them on my child?
Julie: When in doubt, dilute. The rule of thumb is newborns and babies, 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil to 2-3 drops of EO’s and 1 Teaspoon of carrier oil to 2-3 drops of EO’s for toddlers. Never put oils directly in the eye or ears. Should some get in the eyes uses a carrier oil, such as coconut, olive etc, and rub that around the eye to help dilute the oil. Using water to “flush” the eye only pushes the oil into eye further as oil and water repel. If there are no supplemental facts on the bottle, do not ingest.
Is their an age limit for using EO's on babies?
Julie: No, I’ve used oils on babies weeks old to help with reflux, colic, sleep and breastfeeding.
With the flu season upon us, what EOs would you recommend most as remedies for cold, flu's and other winter ailments?
Julie: Diffuse with the Protective Blend (has oils like Clove, Cinnamon, Wild Orange and Eucalyptus), Frankincense or Lemon in the house to counteract airborne pathogens. Those oils, which are are antiviral, along with Oregano and Melaleuca are known to be antiviral and antibacterial. When a child is sick, oils like Basil, Clove or melaleuca to the bottom of the feet and spine will help the child to fight if off more quickly and effectively. (Dilution is needed of course)
EO's are for the whole family, not just the children... what, in your opinion, are the top 3 EO's every family should have in their home at all times?
Julie:Lemon, as an antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, antibiotic and disinfectant, can’t go wrong always having it on hand. Lemon is also a natural mood elevator and has a calming effect.
Peppermint: is an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, expectorant and stimulant. it can also be used in skin care, calming, cooling, pain and tension reducing, digestives issues.
Lavender: analgesic, antibiotic, antidepressant, antiseptic, diuretic, disinfectant, sedative. Used in wellness for emergency salve spray, skin care, calming, living space disinfectant or for the nice aroma.
A lot of mom's have to deal with viral infections such as RSV, Roseola and Hand, Foot and Mouth in the first year of life... what EO's would you recommend for each of these ailments...either for preventative measures or for when a child the infection?
Julie: I can’t say what to use in a blog - but it’s the same idea as for the cold and flu remedy questions above. antiviral, antiseptic and antibacterial oils, etc. I would mention using the protective blend for preventative measures and calming blend for sleeping during the course of the sickness. I can also direct you to www.neweverythingessential.me where you can read about scientific evidence and suggested protocols for numerous diseases/disorders or Modern Essentials as a resource. I found protocols to use for the above conditions on the internet. Once they know what to look for and how it works, your readers will have no difficulty finding the best oils to use. If readers are interested, I am happy to offer an in person class in LA, or online class where we can discuss in more detail.
There are a lot of EOs on the market, but from my research doTERRA seems to be the best... what makes doTERRA EOs more effective that other brands?
Julie: During my Acupuncture training we learned that herbs from their natural habitats are most effective in treating illnesses. doTERRA was the only company, I found, that searched the globe for the best plant material then tested them for the highest medicinal quality. They also have a 3rd party test their products to ensure every oil meets 100% pure quality. doTERRA created their own standard, higher than what the FDA requires, known as Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. It is the only essential oil approved for internal use and provides Supplement Facts for those oils which are safe to ingest.
I also appreciate the way in which doTERRA gives back to the people and towns in the areas of the world they source their oils. doTERRA believes in leaving a legacy and creating a sustainable future the farms and the local economy. Their "co-impact sourcing" provides jobs, water, networks, above market payments for growers, harvesters, distillers and other essential makers of doTERRA EOs.
And lastly, doTERRA has a nonprofit foundation called Healing Hands that seeks to bring healing and hope to the world for lives free of disease and empower impoverished countries to utilize the tools they need to be self reliant. doTERRA provides all the overhead and admin costs for this foundation and ensures that 100% of all donations go directly to those receiving aid. A quality not many non-profits possess.
I hope this sheds some light on EO's and their many benefits. If you are interested in buying some EO's to try on yourself or family, I encourage you to check out doTerra options here. You can buy single essentials oils including the ones mentioned above like lavender, basil, lemon etc, or you can check out their package kits that contain a variety of oils, including a lot of what is mentioned above. My favorite is the Family Physician Kit as it contains 10 EOs that are great for many ailments that the whole family can benefit from.
