Family Summer Must-Haves : Sunscreen

I grew up with skin cancer (specifically melanoma) in my family,  so sun protection has always been a BIG part of my life! As a little girl, I would ALWAYS be out in the sun on beach trips and pool days. But as a teenager I learned quickly to do everything I possibly can to avoid too much sun exposure. Not only to protect myself from skin cancer, but also to slow down the aging process.

Facts:

On average, one person dies EVERY hour in America from Skin Cancer.

Melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults and the second most diagnosed cancer in children.

More than 90% of our visible skin aging is caused by the sun.

Guidelines:

Stay out of the direct sun from 10am to 4pm.

For daily use apply no less than an SPF 30 (per my dermatologist recommendation).

Apply sunscreen at 30 mins prior to sun exposure.

Cover up! Invest in hats and sunnies.

See your physician EVERY year for a professional skin exam.

Now that I live in one of the sunniest states in the country, its especially important to pass along good skincare habits to my family. For us, it starts with sunscreen! After my research and discussion with medical professionals, I personally recommend choosing a "physical" or "chemical-free" sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Unlike chemical based sunscreens, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on top of the skin, forming a barrier against the sun's rays. You may have heard you should look for a "broad-spectrum" product that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Any sunscreen that contains the physical blocker zinc oxide or titanium dioxide will do this. Things to note, make sure to be mindful of the expiration date on the label and peak sun hours between 10am-2pm.

My favorite sunscreen to use not only on myself but on my child/ family is Mustela SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Mineral Sunscreen Lotion. Mustela offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays and made with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, which, as mentioned, are safest for skin (especially baby skin). This formula is paraben-free, phthalate-free, phenoxyethanol-free, fragrance-free, PABA-free and hypoallergenic, and is water and sweat resistant (up to 40 minutes).

As you know from previous posts, I truly love this brand and everything they make. They also carry SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Mineral Sunscreen Stick and  an After Sun Spray that is great to use after a day in the sun to hydrate the skin. Plus, its smells like a dream! I've been using this stuff since Camden was 6 months old, and love how he has grown to enjoy putting sunscreen on at the beach too.

To further note how amazing Mustela is, they are offering my readers $5 OFF on products from their website! Just go to their website here and once you're at checkout, enter JULES5 at checkout. The discount code will be valid for 1 month.

If you decide to try Mustela sunscreen out, please come back and leave a comment so I can hear how you like it as well :) Happy Summer/Screening!

XOXO
