Today I am launching the first post in a new "how to" series. The "how to" series will highlight how to's on an array of topics including baby, home, beauty, and lifestyle. As a mom, wife, business owner and keeper of the home, I always feel like I take one step forward and two steps back when it comes to having my life (and everything in it) organized. I thought starting a "how to" series would force me to explore my own needs of learning more efficient ways to organize my life. Do you ever feel this way? I recently reorganized a room in our house that holds all of the baby "extras" (things like bulk diapers, wipes, food, items that we haven't started using yet etc.) Prior to doing this, my shelves were a hot mess! I knew I had to do something as we are selling our house, and the room flat out looked like a pigsty you would see at the county fair! I wish I would have taken a before picture, but in all reality no one needed to see that.
I immediately jumped on the computer and got to researching. From what I found when factoring in my organizing needs, there were two essentials in getting this room show ready. A label maker and clear plastic bins. Granted, I know I am not finding some new and innovative way to organize here, (and if you are an experienced organizer, you are probably laughing at me right now) but for us novice folks this was like finding a beacon of light... or beacon of hope!
First off I must say, WHY has no one ever told me how fabulous a label maker is? I seriously think it is one of the greatest things ever invented. My husband actually took it away from me the other day because he was finding things like "banana" labeled on food. Yes, I might have gotten a little carried away, but, man do I love my label maker! Second, I realize clear plastic bins have been around for decades now, but why has no one ever told me how handy and effective they are?? Maybe I am the only one on the planet that missed this whole organizing memo, but if not then share away I will. Below are the essentials that I found most beneficial.
Brother Personal Labeler Machine: This things is addictive, truly. Don't say I didn't warn ya! Super easy to use, and offers a lot of really fancy stuff that I haven't tried yet but can't wait to once I start labeling in my office, or on another banana.
Rubbermaid Clear Plastic Storage Bins: These things are great. Very durable and have an easy off/on lid. These fit the open shelves we have, but I also liked the size of the food storage boxes. I don't just use them for food, I use them for all sorts of smaller items. These bins saved me loads of room. I literally cleared off a complete shelf without throwing anything away.
Here is how I used these items. Nothing fancy, just a quick and easy fix for an area that is now cleaner, more efficient and momma friendly!
