Hi everyone! I am back with another Mom and Mom Q&A this week! Today we are chatting with Lyndi Kennedy, a mom, blogger and curator of Lyndi in the City, personal stylist AND creator of Game Face Wipes. Lyndi is pretty much amazingly awesome! I found Lyndi in the world of social media a couple of years ago and have been a fan, follower and supporter ever since! Her style is amazing (obvs) and her entrepreneurial drive will make any mama inspired! To learn more about this modern mom, read below!
As a mom, what has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge for me as a mother is being too hard on myself. I had this idea of the "perfect mom" and was constantly feeling like I wasn't living up to that. I make mistakes, my kids make mistakes- and thats ok!! Especially if we can learn from them. Its taken me years but Ive finally learned to stop beating myself up, I know how hard Im trying and how much I love my kiddos!
What has surprised you the most about being a mom?
The thing that surprised me the most is how much you could love a tiny little person you've never met before!! Oh the love I had for those babies the second I held them!! Also, I remember being pregnant with my second son and being scared- thinking theres no way I could love another baby as much as I love my first son. Was I going to be able to give him that same kind of love? I was so relieved- and surprised, to find that my heart absolutely loved the second baby just as much!! Ofcourse with my 3rd I again felt just as much love!
Not only are you a hands-on mother to a son, but you are also a successful business woman. Can you tell us a little bit about your blog and how this came about?
Thank you!! I started my business as a wardrobe stylist 2 years ago. Before having kids I worked in retail and the entertainment industry so I thought it was a great way to use the abilities I had while being able to work my schedule around my kids' schedules. A friend of mine suggested I start a blog to go along with my business as a stylist, so I did!! I didn't expect it to grow and become a business itself- but it did!! I feel lucky because its something that works well with being a full-time mom!
Where do you find your inspiration?
Everywhere!! There are characters in movies whose style has inspired me and stayed with me for years!! Ive been obsessed with celebrities like Kate Moss, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, and Miranda Kerr for years!!
What is your trick in raising grounded, down to earth children?
I have learned so much from raising kids!! So funny how they teach us more than we teach them sometimes!! From what I learned, giving them freedom to make choices (within safe boundaries) and learn from the consequences is so important. I feel its so important to take time to just be together- away from technology and even other people- and just be together. For us that place is the beach and I feel close and connected to my boys when we are laughing, swimming, playing, dancing, singing and eating together.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Typically we get up, eat breakfast, make lunches, and get off to school! My toddler stays with me 3 days a week and 2 days a week he goes to preschool. When he's home we go to the park and meet friends, go on walks, bug-hunting, clean the house, and I try to get some emails answered or work online a bit. On the days he goes to preschool I am either out on a photoshoot, shopping for clients, going through their closet and putting looks together for the week, packing for them, etc. Once its 3:00 its time to pick up boys from school, feed them, get homework done, and off to baseball practice, hitting, or a church activity. Then its time for dinner, showers, baths, and bedtime!! Then its time for me to get laundry done and either write a blog post or Instagram post!!
Describe your style?
My style is eclectic, and I love to mix it up! I go from boho to girly dresses to ripped up jeans and a tee, depending on the day.
Two must have mom products you can’t live without?
I loved a sling when my babies were little because I am always movin! That way I could still hold them close and get things done at the same time. I had a Moses basket with each too, which was one of my favorite things!! Adding a third, essential oils. My favorites and most used are lavender, peppermint, and melaluca. I use doTerra, but whichever you prefer.
Where do you find your balance?
I find balance by exercising, music, doing things for me like a mani/pedi or massage, spending time with a close friend or sister, praying, and reading scripture.
What is one thing you would have done differently as a mom?
I would have just soaked up every little thing and taken it all in, taking the time to really appreciate the moment!! Not that I haven't, but I would have even more if I knew how fast it really goes by.
Favorite quote that rings true to you as a mom?
"Enjoy the little things in life because one day you'll look back and realize they were big things" - Kurt Vonnegut
What words of advice would you have for a new moms?
Listen to your intuition!! You know more than you think you know. Stop what you're doing and just enjoy the moment... Take time to listen, read, sing, hug, laugh... I read once that kids decide in their first year if the world is a safe place or not- and it affects the way they go about the rest of their life. That really stuck with me!!
