Spring is now in the air and so is National Fragrance Day!!
Have you ever been transported back in time simply by catching the scent of a perfume? This ALWAYS happens to me! There's a perfume that always reminds me of my mom (that I now wear too!), the smell of Old Spice will forever smell like my husband (and my dad, grandfather and every other man I've ever come in contact with honestly), the smell of Mustela will always remind me of Camden as a baby. I love perfumes as they are something my mom and I share. Growing up, she would always gift me with a new perfume for my birthday or Christmas.
Whatever the fragrance, scents and memory are powerfully linked. We associate summer with the smell of freshly cut grass, thunderstorms with the smell of damp air and the acrid scent of sulfur when lightning has struck. We often connect memories of winter holidays with warm smells of baked pies, cinnamon and cookies.
The brain is an amazing thing and science finds out more about it every day. Simply put, the olfactory bulb which is responsible for processing all those smells we take in is next to the hippocampus deep inside the brain. Neuroscientists have discovered that one of the responsibilities of the hippocampus is creating new memories. With the olfactory bulb and the hippocampus so closely placed, research suggests smell and memory really are linked!
Our memories are most closely linked to those we have loved. While we may often take a trip down memory lane by looking at old pics, perhaps this time remembering our favorite fragrances will stir up memories that were long forgotten or maybe we will make some new ones.
So in honor of National Fragrance Day, I am sharing some of my favorite perfumes below!
Santal 33: By far the greatest smelling perfume ever in my opinion. This is THAT perfume, the one you smell walking down the street and immediately have to stop the person and ask what they are wearing. It's the same perfume that you will smell at a restaurant weeks later, and know exactly what it is. It is the most deliciously haunting perfume I have ever encountered. I knew I needed it! I got it this Christmas from my mom (naturally) and am obsessed. Every guy and girl I come across always compliments this scent when I'm wearing it. It just mixes with the skin and your body temperature in a way that smells so divine. This is and will forever be my go to! Features sandalwood, virginia cedar, cardamom, violet, papyrus, spices, leather, musk and amber.
Apothia IF eau de Perfume: This was a perfume of my moms that I loved so she let me have it. I used to wear it a lot when Camden was first born, so it reminds me of that special time. Fresh, clean, light and sensual. The heart of the fragrance is a dazzling bouquet of tuberose, freesia and white gardenia and blooms with top notes of zesty grapefruit, bergamot and sparkling yuzu, ending in a deep romantic drydown.
Viva La Juicy: This perfume reminds me of college, which was an amazing time in my life! Whenever I feel like I want to party, I spritz this on! Viva la Juicy combines delicious wild berries with creamy vanilla and bright jasmine.
Fresh Cannabis Santal: This fragrance reminds me of when I lived in NYC. It was right after college, and was another amazing time in my life. It will remind me of the hustle and vibrance of that city! Exotic citruses and warm notes of chocolate, vetiver, and vanilla musk surround the unique heart of this seductive scent: a special proprietary accord that captures the raw sensuality of cannabis, known for its woodsy, musky properties.
