Secrets from a PR Pro + Self Promotion Tips
Okay ya'll, so I'm finally starting a PR series that I'm so excited to share with you. I have been eager to start this new series for a while (and by a while I mean over a year) but, I just couldn't get my ducks in a row about how to best organize the plethora of content and tips that I want to share.
So let me back track a bit.... Hi, my name is Julie and I am a publicist. I am co-owner of OMG! Publicity with my business partner Beth Fromm, and get to work with a TON of amazing authors, musicians and lifestyle experts on really awesome campaigns. I have worked on countless New York Times Best-Selling books and Grammy Award winning records. I have been a publicist for almost a decade and love the ever changing and exciting world of PR.
If you asked my husband what my name is, he would say "It's Julie Publicist". My husband and I have a little inside joke about this that I will share with you all. The night we first met he asked for my number and put me in his phone as "Julie Publicist". Perhaps it was the best way for him to remember this "Julie" based on the way his brain works, or perhaps the single guy at the time had a few Julie's in his phone already ;) lol Whatever the reason, I have always been "Julie Publicist" in his phone, even though "Julie wife" or "Julie baby momma" would both be more appropriate considering where we are in our relationship. But as he always says "you ARE a publicist, not just by trade but it's part of your makeup and personality". I'm a communicator at heart, I believe in the power of sharing stories, and I can spin just about anything you throw my way to try and make a more productive and positive outcome. Hence, the tagline of my blog and one of the main reasons I started a blog in the first place.
So I started thinking, if publicity is my gift, how can I best share this with my community and beyond? Of course my clients get this provided to them as a paid service. But now that I am in this blogger game, I've been figuring out the best way to "share the wealth" so to speak. And by wealth, I mean knowledge. I think we all have something to offer in the blogger space that I like to call the Wild West. Some bloggers are experts at photography, SEO, engagement growth etc. In this ever changing environment, how can I be of assistance to other bloggers, moms and entrepreneurs out there that may need a little bit of advice and direction in the world of publicity and marketing?
How to best brand yourself is one of, if not the most important part of any blog or business. If you don't know how to properly brand yourself, then how can you grow and reach your maximum audience possible? How can you effectively monetize? How can you grow your followers and engagement? How can you compete in this ever changing space? How can you properly publicize and market yourself when you can't afford to hire an outsourced firm or person to manage?
So after many months of prayer, research and countless hours of talking to blogger friends and clients of mine, I came up with this new series, BYOP: BE YOUR OWN PUBLICIST. This series is dedicated to bloggers, brands, or any entrepreneur who want to learn how to publicize, brand and market themselves effectively. I want this to be a place where we can talk and ask questions freely about all things PR, and hopefully it will be a place that you can take away some great tips to help you and your blog/brand grow. I will be rolling out a plethora of information every month sharing all kinds of tips and tricks for you all in the world of PR!
***To note, when I say "blogger" or "brand" or "entrepreneur", I am really talking about all the above plus any writer, musician or any person out there who has something to promote.
To start this series off today, I want to talk about Publicity 101: SELF PROMOTION: why it is important to toot your own horn and how to best sale/pitch yourself without being "salesy".
Let’s be honest: self-promotion is really uncomfortable. Clients tell me this over and over again–and I get it. I would so much rather praise someone else on social media than talk about myself. Agreed. Self-promotion is awkward, especially to first-time bloggers/entrepreneurs. You sound desperate, right? And feel a little vain?
But here’s the catch: a blogger HAS TO BE their own biggest advocate. If you don’t talk about your blog/brand and business and push it into the spotlight, who will?
It’s a tension I hear all the time: “How do I promote my brand without sounding like an arrogant–ahem, or a needy–salesperson?”
I promise you, you can ALWAYS sell without being salesy. Where there’s a will, there’s way. But selling subtly and humbly is an art. So, for the Blogger Who Hates Self-Promotion: sign up below for the 8 ninja pitching secrets to get you started!
