Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays + Winter Workout Essentials GIVEAWAY
This time of year is always a busy season with travel, the typical holiday festivities, tying up professional loose ends before everyone closes up shop etc. How how do we fabulous women/moms stay svelte while mixing and mingling during the hustle and bustle? Below I've shared my tips for sticking to a healthy and guilt-free routine—even when faced with tempting platters of holiday foods. I've chatted with a lot of trainers and experts in this world to try and gather PRACTICAL helpful hints. Check them out below:
#1 Get a Smart Snacking Strategy - With all the holiday parties this month, I think there is truth behind the theory that eating a small healthy snack before you leave the house can curb your appetite and keep you from over indulging. I don’t always do it, but when I do it does help. Something like a handful of carrots and almond, or some celery and humus while getting ready can really help your overall carb and calorie count.
#2 Have Healthy Winter Friendly Foods on Hand - Everybody needs a good dose of soup when the cold weather hits. I make a quick and easy chicken vegetable soup that is so filling and good: I start with organic chicken broth, then I boil some glute-free pasta noodles in the broth. About 3 - 4 minutes before the pasta is cooked, I throw in some greens like kale, chard or spinach (or all three! Then celery and carrots.. I like to top the soup off with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a sliced avocado to add a little zing.
#3 Indulge for Real (Sometimes!) - When I indulge, I think it is best to go for the real deal. Don’t try to satisfy a craving with a substitute (who are we kidding, it never works!). Iend up eating more of the 'healthy version' than what I would have eaten if I just had that slice of pizza that I'm still craving!
#4 Get a Staple 'Easy-to-Make' Salad Memorized - I love great salad. Sometimes, I don't have the creativity to make a fantastic one, so I end up eating bad! I learned a few years ago that memorizing quick and simple salads really goes a long way! One of my favorites is an Arugula and Avocado Salad—it’s filling and full of healthy fats, plus it's a huge crowd pleaser. Take a few handfuls of fresh arugula, add toasted pine nuts (or plain if you don't have the time to roast), juice from 1 large lemon, a drizzle of olive oil, sliced avocado and you're done! You can also add shaved Parmesan if you need something extra. Literally takes 2 mns and is sooo good!
#5 Dress for (SLENDER) Success -Another incentive to eating well at an event or party is to wear clothes that actually fit instead of loose or baggy clothes. When I do this, it keeps me conscious of what I am eating and helps me avoid eating too much (plus, it's fun when you can't breathe from eating too much, been there too many times hah!).
Another thing to add is my workout gear during the winter! I love Under Armour and New Balance as the materials really hold up in all kinds of weather (and in washes!) I also love my iFit. iFit has also made my workout life a little easier! It tracks EVERYTHING from my calories, heart rate, it even tracks my sleeping pattern!
