045: From Influencer To Best-Selling Author: How To Land A Book Deal + Best-Selling Launch Strategies
Today’s episode took me back to my publishing and business roots, as we have Jennifer Smith, creator of SPIN Literary on the show. SPIN is a global literary firm providing clients with guidance through every phase of the literary process, and Jennifer has been an integral part of the publishing world for decades. After working as a VP at one of the nation’s top publishing firms, Jennifer decided to start her own business while working abroad from sunny Australia.
Jennifer has her fair share of experience when it comes to getting content published. She’s worked with everyone from Stephen King, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Brad Paisley, and Bethenny Frankel on releasing and creating books, so it’s fair to say that the girl knows a thing or two.
In this episode, Jennifer gives you a step-by-step roadmap to acquire a book deal and turn your book idea into a best-seller. She also shares how to translate content into what audiences are engaged with, create meaningful dialogues, and securing a brand and reputation - among lots of other things!
Jennifer’s ‘take-action’ items and advice:
Create and solidify your platform before trying to attain a book deal
Busting best-seller myths
Establish your brand, your voice, a reputation with your audience - then worry about what comes next in terms of literary projects, branding deals, etc.
Think outside the box! It doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing.
P.S. If you’re curious about what Jennifer’s favorite books are (I was!), she lists Catcher in the Rye and the Tao of Pooh as two of her most adored, with Patrick Swayze, Joan Rivers, and Al Gore being among the most memorable authors she’s ever worked with.
